Medicine safety at home: storage, labels and mistakes to avoid

Many medicine mistakes happen at home — and most can be prevented with a few simple habits.

Keep an up-to-date list

Write down every medicine you take, including those bought without a prescription, vitamins and herbal products. Show it to every clinician and pharmacist you see.

Read the label every time

  • Check the name, when to take it, and any warnings — for example with food, or about driving.
  • Use the measuring device that came with a liquid medicine, not a kitchen spoon.
  • If anything is unclear, ask a pharmacist before taking it.

Store safely

  • Keep medicines in their original packaging, out of sight and reach of children.
  • Follow the storage instructions — some need a cool, dry place, some a fridge.

Expired and unused medicines

Don't use medicines past their expiry date, and don't keep leftovers "just in case". Ask your pharmacy how to dispose of them safely in your area.

Never share

A medicine prescribed for one person may be unsafe for another, even with the same symptoms.
