Making regular movement achievable

Physical activity includes movement during leisure, transport, work and daily tasks. Regular activity supports physical and mental health, while the safe type and intensity differ by person.

Everything counts

Walking, cycling, wheeling, play, sport, housework and climbing stairs are all physical activity. You don't need a gym to be active.

Why it matters

Regular activity helps the heart, muscles and bones, supports a healthy weight, and is good for mood, sleep and thinking. WHO also advises reducing the time spent sitting.

Starting well

  • Start with manageable amounts; consistency matters more than intensity.
  • Choose activities you enjoy and can fit into the day — a walk to the shop, the stairs instead of the lift.
  • Ask a health professional before changing your activity if symptoms, pregnancy, disability or a medical condition affect what is safe for you.

For the amounts WHO recommends by age, see how much activity do you need?
