How much

For adults, the general recommendation is at least seven hours of sleep a day. Children and teenagers need more.

More than hours

  • Keep wake and sleep times reasonably consistent, including at weekends, when possible.
  • Quality matters: waking often or not feeling rested after enough hours is worth noticing.

Signs worth discussing

  • Loud, persistent snoring or pauses in breathing noticed by someone else.
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep most nights for weeks.
  • Strong daytime sleepiness, especially while driving.

Discuss ongoing sleep problems with a qualified health professional. For habits that help, see everyday habits for better sleep.
