When to seek urgent care

This website is not an emergency service. Some symptoms need help straight away — call 115 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Call 115 for

  • Chest pain or pressure, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back.
  • Signs of stroke: sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side; trouble speaking or understanding; sudden loss of vision or balance.
  • Severe difficulty breathing.
  • Heavy bleeding that won't stop.
  • Fainting, confusion or unresponsiveness.
  • Severe allergic reaction — swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.
  • Sudden, severe pain anywhere, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Don't wait

With heart attack and stroke especially, every minute matters. Don't wait to see whether symptoms pass, and don't wait for an online answer or a message.

Finding care

For the nearest hospital, emergency department or pharmacy, see find care.
